8 Big Ideas for Remodeling a Small Bathroom

April 26, 2018 Bathroom Remodeling

People tend to love older homes because of the character and charm. However, often times that means dealing with some non-functional spaces, such as small bathrooms. Bathrooms in newer homes are now being built nearly twice the size as bathrooms in smaller homes, but that doesn’t necessarily stop us from buying the older homes!

If your plan is to renovate your bathroom but you don’t want to spend the money to actually knock down walls and create a larger space, we can help.

Here are 8 ideas to making your small bathroom feel big without changing the dimensions!

Lighter Colors are Better

It’s a tale as old as time, but still deserves to be mentioned. Dark paint, dark tiles, and dark cabinetry can all contribute to a space feeling smaller. Lightening up your bathroom’s palette is one of the easiest ways to make the room feel more open.

Pedestal Sinks

Ditch the vanity and use a pedestal sink. When you don’t have such a large piece of furniture taking up limited square footage, a small bathroom suddenly feels more spacious. There are a lot of different designs that fit different styles, so you’re guaranteed to find one to fit your needs.

Mirrors

Try adding a new mirror—the bigger the better. Don’t be afraid to get a mirror that extends past the counter top, it will only make the space feel larger. Mirrors are especially helpful to those without windows, as it bounces light off more surfaces, creating a brighter area. You can also consider a medicine cabinet, that way you have a mirror and some bonus hidden storage!

Float the Vanity

Can’t afford to lose the counter space from a pedestal sink? Try a vanity that floats, or is on legs. The space underneath creates an illusion of more open room, and it can be a good place to keep smaller items.

Shower Curtain versus Glass Door

Glass doors can seem like an appealing upgrade in an older bathroom, but it can minimize the space if the glass door swings out into the only space you have. Shower curtains won’t invade any of your space. If you have the room and still want the upgrade, sliding glass doors are really your best bet. Being able to see into the shower makes the bathroom feel larger, and the door will never be in the way.

Curved Sink

Another sink option is getting a sink with curved countertops. In small spaces, inches matter. Not having to worry about bumping into corners can make walking through a bathroom feel easier and have a more open feel.

Towel Bar Location

Consider putting your towel rack on the back of the door to open wall space and declutter. This gives you more wall space that you can either leave open or add shelving or cabinets for added storage.

Use Horizontal Lines in Design

If you are redoing some tile work or paint, consider using horizontal lines. While you want your overall palette to be light, a dark horizontal line that goes around the room will attract your eyes and keep them moving across the room, giving the illusion of a bigger room. It can also add a special element of design, so feel free to get creative and pick out a fun color or tile.
